I went to enjoy the sunshine and friends, but to my surprise I played amazingly well!  I kept saying to myself before swinging, "navel to spine...squeeze glutes".  A few times I forgot to engage my core and zzzzzing...there went the ball into the trees and/or sand trap.  That's alright though, because I enjoyed seeing the benefits and difference it makes to have that CORE connection.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A few months back I went home to Colorado and rode my horse after months of not riding.  Back in the day, before Pilates was such a priority in my life, my whole body would get sore and I would get tired after a few hours of riding.  I was amazed at my ability to not only keep riding without tiring but how much better I was at it! Don't get stressed over the pressure to fit into last years shorts, tank tops, and for some...bikinis!  Club Pilates is here to help and support all of you so you feel your best this Spring/Summer season!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some pointers to kick start you:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;    * Stay focused and determined but have fun!  Stick to your set workouts and add in some extra cardio while enjoying nature.  Fast walks on the beach, hiking, bike rides, surf, take a kayak lesson...anything you might find enjoyable!! &lt;br /&gt;    * Check in on your Nutrition.  Are you realistic with yourself on how much sugar you intake per day?  Are your portion sizes double what you may really need?  How much are you eating past 6pm?  Sometimes a simple food log can really open up your eyes!  Extreme diet change is not the goal, but awareness is!!! &lt;br /&gt;    * Stay positive when thinking about yourself and your body image.  Often when setting out a goal for ourselves, we can start to get critical and/or down on our progress if it isn't instant. A review by British scientists agreed that exercise reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, some types of cancer, type 2 diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and depression. Too bad about half of all American’s aren’t getting enough of it! ! !&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps the body absorb calcium.  Vitamin D also helps the body keep the right amount of phosphorus and calcium levels in the blood and can prevent bone loss.  Known as the “sunshine vitamin”, the body actually manufactures this vitamin after being exposed to sunshine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Are you getting enough Vitamin D?!  Being exposed to sunshine 10-15 minutes per day, 3 times weekly will satisfy the body’s requirement of needed Vitamin D.  If you avoid the sun or use sunscreen (hopefully organic based SPF!), or if you are dark-skinned, overweight, or over 50, you’re at greater risk of deficiency.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Not getting enough Vitamin D can increase your risk for:&lt;br /&gt;*diabetes&lt;br /&gt;*high blood pressure&lt;br /&gt;*stroke&lt;br /&gt;*heart failure&lt;br /&gt;*some types of cancer&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Preventive care guidelines currently recommend 1,000 IU of Vitamin D per day for adult women 18 and older and men 50 and older. Well I’m here to let you know, we aren’t just trying to torture you!!  Jumping is incredible for increasing your heart rate, burning more calories, including cardio into your Pilates workout routine, and maybe most importantly helping your lymphatic system run better!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Lymphatic system...Who...What??”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The lymphatic system is the metabolic garbage can of the body. It rids the body of toxins, dead cells, cancer cells, nitrogenous wastes, infectious viruses, trapped protein, fatty globules, bad bacteria, foreign substances, heavy metals, and other assorted junk the cells cast off.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While the body has many dozens of lymph nodes, they are mostly clustered in the armpits, neck, chest, abdomen, and groin.  Examples are the tonsils, adenoids, appendix, spleen, and the thymus gland. These nodes and organs provide much of the body's immune defense.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The lymphatic system lacks a pump to move the fluid, unlike the circulatory system which has the heart as its pump. It is vital that lymph fluids continue to flow in order to eliminate waste from the body. The flow is dependent on muscle contractions and body movements, massage and other forms of compression.  Studies have proven that one of the best ways to stimulate this flow is by jumping!  YAY - that means the tedious jumping has all been for an even better cause than just cardio and exhaustion! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I’ve already had my tonsils and appendix removed so you bet you’ll be seeing me jumping more often to help my lymph nodes keep flowing through the lymphatic organs I STILL have to keep my immunity levels up! One day my mom came and visited me in San Diego (she lives in Colorado) and said with much excitement, "Let's take a walk on the beach!".  I had grown sedentary sitting on my ocean-view patio, watching the waves with a glass of champagne - not actually walking near the waves.  Without knowing it, I had grown complacent with not having an exercise routine and feeling like a blob.  I wasn't happy, felt like my body was hopeless (and I was only 23!), and my mom could tell I was hurting from the inside out.  We went for that walk, but I had no idea how it was going to change my life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bare feet in the sand, sun on my back, waves washing up against my ankles, time to think and organize my mind, and working out my muscles at the same time - who could want more?!!  From then on my life has continuously progressed towards better fitness, nutrition, and overall health. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I started simply walking the beach everyday.  "One step at a time",  as the saying goes.  I began feeling so good from these walks that I started researching group classes at my gym again (which I had neglected for nearly 3 years!).  I saw a Mat Pilates class on the schedule and said to myself, "Might as well try it out...the movie stars sure look good from it".  Pilates does change the shape of your body - clothes fit differently.  Pilates tightens your waistline even if no weight is lost on the scale.  Pilates builds muscle without bulk and improves posture - makes you seem taller and slimmer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, for me, it wasn’t just the fact that Pilates triggered my muscles back into action,  but it fueled my insides - mentally and spiritually - and I began feeling LIFE like never before.  I breathed in air deeper.  I appreciated sunshine sweeter.  I stopped and smelled the tulips, the lilacs, and the roses.  I approached life calmer, more confidently, and felt peace &amp;amp; inspiration all at the same time.  I felt NEW.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So if you're reading this in one of those low times where life seems to be getting overwhelming; if there's too much work to do or not enough work to keep bills afloat, if kids are getting out of school for the summer and now even more of your time is going to be consumed, if the relationship you've been in just went hay-wire after all that effort you exerted or if you’re just feeling down and out...I have a suggestion for you.  Take a walk on the ocean, smell in that ocean breeze, take a minute for yourself, and remember life is out there waiting for you and it still smells sweet.
